Who is Val Howlett from the memoir, In the Dream House?

When Machado met the woman from the Dream House, she was already involved with a woman named Val Howlett. The woman claimed she and Val were in an open relationship at the time, but this later turned out to be untrue. Val was supposed to move in with the woman in Bloomington, but the woman broke up with her and asked Machado to be exclusive instead.
