How does the author use foreshadowing in In the Company of the Courtesan: A Novel?

Part II, Chapters IV-VI, expose the hypocrisy of society, as men and women who are
supposedly pious use a sacred space as the prelude to illicit relations. In terms of
content, the foreshadowing of "his" arrival (who he is is not yet clear) signals to the
reader that an important, and perhaps dangerous, character is about to enter the scene.
