How do Columbus' voyages east, returning to Spain, differ from his voyages west, heading to the New World?

Columbus' voyages east toward Spain differ from his voyages to the west in that the voyages east are shorter, but more tempestuous. The voyages west are longer, but the weather is not quite as bad, although the storms can still be fierce.
