In the novel, In My Hands: Memories of a Holocaust Rescuer, Irene Gut Opdyke shares her memories of Poland during WWII. She writes about the time she spent rescuing Jews from Hitler's regime, as well as her experiences as a partisan fighter. Opdyke's memoir is graphic and honest. She describes Nazi cruelty, and the way in which dozens of people worked against that cruelty, assisting the Jews is escaping, as well as providing food and shelter for those unable to escape. In the end, the author was directly responsible for freeing thirteen Jews.
