Who is Kate from If the Witness Lied and what is their importance?

Kate is Smithy's roommate at boarding school. It is Kate's family that Smithy typically spends holidays with so that Smithy can avoid facing her own family situation. When Smithy runs away from boarding school, Kate feels betrayed by her roommate. Kate is very religious, so she attends church every Sunday. Kate ends up calling Smithy's grandparents to alert them of the fact that Smithy is afraid for Tris and that their Aunt Cheryl is up to something.
