How does the author use foreshadowing in If the Witness Lied?

In Chapter Six, Madison and Jack come to realize that Cheryl lied about the way their father died, foreshadowing the kids investigating the matter and proving that Cheryl had something to do with their father's death, so that she could take over their house and other assets.
