Levi learned that the numbers epitomized the stages of destruction of European Judaism. The numbers told everything: the period of entry into the camp, the convoy of which one formed a part, and the nationality. A prisoner bearing the numbers from 30,000 to 80,000 was treated with respect, as there only a few hundred of these survivors left from the Polish ghettos.The numbers 116,00 or 117,000 numbered only 40 survivors and represented the Greeks of Salonika. The high numbers represented the freshmen members of the conscripts.
