Who is Bates from If I Die in a Combat Zone, Box Me Up and Ship Me Home and what is their importance?

Bates is one of O'Brien's friends in the Alpha Company. Although he is not O'Brien's intellectual equal, he does share O'Briens feeling about the war and its absurdity. Bates also displays compassion for the Vietnamese people that sets him apart.
