What effect does the appearance of Italian soldiers have on the hotel guests in the play, Idiot’s Delight?

As the Italian soldiers enter the hotel, the other guests are waiting for a declaration of war. For this reason, they become quiet and wait for the soldiers to speak. The soldiers, however, are there to unwind and enjoy themselves along with the guests.
