What is an ice island in the novel, Ice Hunt?

An ice island is a rarity that occurs when giant icebergs calve off the mainland glaciers. Then ocean currents drive the floating mountains into the polar ice cap where they freeze in place. Because they contain very old ice and sometimes even boulders and sections of earth, they provide a look at the past.
