Why was it shocking and perplexing that Caitlin sent a picture to and requested a picture from Martin?

I'm not sure about perplexing, but it was difficult for Martin to get a picture of himself to send her. Martin's father, relying on the help of a friend, actually arranged for a photographer to take pictures. Martin was thrilled, and wore his father’s
suit for the pictures.
