What does Dick's character symbolize in the novel, I Love Dick?

Dick represents who Chris aspires to be. Chris flirts with Dick and this develops into obsession, but the letters reach beyond sexual desire. Chris wants to connect with Dick on an intellectual level because he is respected for his mind, which is what Chris wants to be. Her obsession with Dick becomes Chris’ obsession with who she longs to be.
