One major symbol in the play is Charlotte's love of phonographs. Charlotte prefers them to the radio, thus, most people consider her old-fashioned. This preference reflects a major aspect of Charlotte's personality..... the fact that she would rather hear the records of her choosing, rather than hear the news or current events. Her phonograph enables her to insolate from reality..... it allows her to live inside the world she has created in her own head.
