Sharia law is religious law that forms part of the Islamic tradition. Malala and her community had to put up with a narrow interpretation of Sharia law. Girls were not allowed to attend school. Men had to have long beards. Western media and culture was not permitted. Any schools that did exist taught conservative Islamic ideas only.
