What instructions does the man give David?

The man tells David that he must leave that night during the changing of the guard. He tells David that when he sees him, he should strike a match, as the current will be cut off, which will give him thirty seconds seconds to climb over the fence before the electricity is turned back on.

The man instructs then instructs David as to where he can find water and a compass, which is hidden near a tree. When he gets there, he also finds bread and water. He is to follow the compass southward until he gets to Solanika, get on a ship and hide. Then he must travel north until he arrives in Denmark where he will be safe. The man tells David to stay well hidden on the ship.
