How does the author use foreshadowing in I Am David?

At the start of the novel, the camp commandant tells David to make his way to a certain tree, where he will find supplies to help him on his journey. One of the items is a compass.... something that David has never used but which he quickly learns is invaluable for finding his way to Denmark. This foreshadows the David's journey.
