As you read the novel, is it clear where and when the story is taking place?

I think it is clear that the story takes place somtime in the early 1940's. It is not clear exactly where David's concentration camp is but it is likely in an Eastern European country (according to geographical clues, probably Bulgaria) and journeys to Denmark.
