Why is Coach Roth concerned with Jojo taking advanced courses in the novel, I Am Charlotte Simmons?

Coach Roth does not want Jojo taking advanced level courses because the coach thinks it will distract his game. He lets Jojo know that the courses he is considering taking are very difficult and are not important.
