Why does Spenser conclude that Robinson has been denied tenure in the novel, Hush Money?

It becomes obvious from Spenser's investigation that Robinson Nevins has been denied tenure by the members of his own department committee because of scandalous gossip connecting him with the alleged suicide of Prentiss Lamont, one of his students.
