One unique aspect of Melchor’s novel is that the language used throughout is pointedly vulgar and at times graphic. This style of language is indicative of the free indirect discourse Melchor uses in her narration, as the language used reflects the characters’ speech. Though the language is informal and accessible, it also adds a level of discomfort to the novel. Two examples of this are the lines “dirty fag” (156) and “skanky slut” (175). The constant use of such language is deliberate as it reflects the sexism, homophobic, and violence that is ingrained into the community of both La Matosa and Villagarbosa. Thus, not only does Melchor create an accurate and realistic setting through the language in the novel, but she also uses language to call attention to the social issues that are central to the novel’s plot.
