The dog symbolizes pain and alienation. When Kenny shoots and kills the dog, it seems to Tub to have been a malevolent impulse. This contributes to Tub’s feeling of being threatened. Moreover, Kenny never informed his friends that the farmer had asked him to kill the dog. Moreover, the farmer’s own emotions about the dog seemingly isolate him from empathy regarding the quandary of Kenny, Tub, and Frank.
