Rodriguez opposes bilingual education because he feels that it confuses the uses of each language. He identifies English as the public language, to be spoken with "gringos," and Spanish as the private, intimate language of the home. Learning English was frightening to him as a child, and dividing the uses of each language seemed to make him feel better.
