Who is Eliza Fairfax; a.k.a. Esme de Breville, Violet Angela Potter from Human Croquet and what is their importance?

Eliza's life is a mystery. Over the course of the novel, we learn that Eliza was purchased as a baby in France. While still an infant, she was abducted by Maude Potter, who renamed her Violet Angela. Violet Angela later ran away from the Potters and made her way to London. Once there, she worked as a waitress before transforming herself into a much sought after prostitute. Legal troubles led her to change her name once again, she chose Eliza. Eliza met Gordon Fairfax when he saved her from a fire. Eliza's end remains a mystery, it is possible that she was murdered and multiple suspects are presented in differing versions of the event.
