The novel is written in third person with a perspective focused generally on Hiccup. This perspective allows the narrator to relate events that Hiccup does not personally witness, such Toothless's flight into the sea dragon's nose. Some of the events are purely from Hiccup's perspective, such as the scene in which Hiccup is down in the sea dragon's throat. The perspective is not omniscient because the reader does not know the thoughts of all the characters. For example, Stoick seems to support Hiccup and to be optimistic that Hiccup will ultimately become a good leader, but he does not say that. The reader does not know if Stoick truly believes in Hiccup's future as leader of the tribe, or if he is merely trying to be supportive because Hiccup is his son.
