How does the author use foreshadowing in How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe: A Novel?

In Chapter 5, the author includes as anecdote about the way every kid wants to be a hero.... but nobody wants to be a time machine repair guy. The anecdote ends with the narrator getting himself a gun, foreshadowing a problem revealed in the novel's opening quote, when he shoots his future self.
