In Chapter One, Daisy tells her story in a slightly sarcastic voice, peppered with insights that make it clear she is clever, observant, and that she yearns for a happy life but is already too worldly to expect it. In immediately announcing that the main importance to her of this summer in England was not the coming war but her relationship with Edmond, she foreshadows a wartime love story.
