Birwad is the rural village where Meena lives with Ammi. She moved to the small town after she fled her home in Vithalgaon to elope with Abdul. Meena’s home is on the outskirts of the town and removed from the other villagers. The author uses Birwad to symbolize the cultural divide between metropolitan and rural areas. While cities are quick to adapt, shift, and embrace change, small towns are more inclined to cling to tradition and reject cultural shifts.
