Who is Gerald from Honor's Splendour and what is their importance?

Gerald is a baron and Duncan's nearest neighbor. He is engaged to Adela, though, Adela believes that he will break off their engagement after hearing that she's been raped. When Gerald returns home he makes his intent to marry Adela very clear.... she, however, is still getting over the rape and make him promise not to seduce her. Gerald accepts her terms.
