War through a child's eyes is a recurring idea in the book. Much of the interest in Homesick lay in its first-hand account of the beginning of the Chinese Communist Revolution. This struggle began in 1926 and ended in 1949 when the Communists took control of China. As a ten-year-old child, Jean saw the war in a much different way than her parents or other adults.
