In Homeless Bird, by Whelan, the main character, Koly has been widowed and must try to find a way to support herself and her family. Through a set of misadventures she ends up having a succesful embroidery business, which allows her to not only improve her fortunes, but teaches her about living life again after the loss of a loved one.
