The fanaticism of the Hitler Youth is a major theme in the book. Adolf Hitler realized the advantage of indoctrinating the very young into Nazism. Not only would they be his loyal followers for decades, but the young mind is more malleable than the older mind, and thus more susceptible to Nazi propaganda. This was the idea behind the Hitler Youth. Hitler celebrated youth because they represented the future, and because they were among his most adoring fans.
