In Book One, Will's story begins with the death of his father, a suicide for which the six-year-old boy wrongly takes the blame. Will is then uprooted and shipped to England when his mother refuses to take custody. This leaves Will feeling unloved and unwanted, a situation that leads him to focus on sports as a way to stand out, to get the love he desires. However, there is a darkness in Will that reveals itself early in his life when he kills a dog who has attempted to love him. This foreshadows an insanity in Will that will reappear often as he grows older.
