Why does Herzog go to Europe in the novel, Herzog?

Herzog goes to Europe at the recommendation of Dr. Edvig, his psychiatrist, to take a vacation. Since Herzog thinks he is breaking down, Dr. Edvig thinks it would be good for Herzog to leave town.
