Because this is a novel about a police investigation, there is a good deal of police lingo included. Much of this terminology is easy to understand as it is inside the scope of common knowledge for most people. Leigh does allow her characters to describe both the way that county sex offender registries work as well as the existence of a national crime database, a database with which some might not be familiar. At one point, the narrator explains that as private investigators, Lance and Morgan could not run a national criminal history "Only law enforcement agencies had access to the National Crime Information Center, the FBI’s national database of crime data” (284).
