Why does Deutsch ask Dr. Lionel Barrett to stay in Hell House?

Deutsch is quickly approaching the end of his life. He is obsessed with life after death, and convinces Dr. Lionel Barrett, who brings in several parapsychology experts, to stay in the house to definitively answer one question for him: Is there life after death?
