Although the story of Heir to the Empire unfolds in space sometime in the future, the language is easy to understand as the characters speak plainly. In most respects, the only way to know that events are unfolding in an unusual setting is the continual references to the many races and species of beings as well as the different galactic systems and planets the action takes place in. This is also evident in the many references made to past events such as Yavin and Endor where some of the biggest battles of the Rebellion took place against the Empire. These are not places familiar to the reader, although the characters speak of them as though they are well known to them.
