Hopetown symbolizes the dream for Black and Native American people to exist outside colonial frameworks. However, due to various factors since emancipation, that dream has begun to fray, and white people started to encroach on the freedom that Hopetown once represented. Tension arises in the novel when white people try to buy the symbol of freedom with the goal of severing the hope for autonomy.
