The state Department of Environmental Protection has supplied a nuclear engineer to answer such questions, a baby-faced man in a mustardcolored turtleneck. He wears notable sideburns, a hangdog look. “The utility sent investigators across the river, since the wind was blowing that way, to take a reading. They detected a small amount of radioactive iodine on the ground.” He pronounces the word iodin. “Can you spell that?” a reporter calls. “Io-DYNE!” a voice booms from the front row.
