Heart Berries is written poetically with a lyricism and sense of mysticism. Her tone is raw, authentic, and honest. Mailhot uses a great deal of symbolism and figurative language to contribute to this overall poetic and ethereal tone. She writes that some of her work is a callback to traditional storytelling, thus reflecting the tone and style of her Salish heritage. This is reinforced throughout the book as Mailhot writes about the symbolism of thunder and shares the traditional story of the creation of the first medicine man. Although her writing is symbolic and mystical, Mailhot rejects the stereotypical symbolism and mysticism of her culture to create an artistic style and tone that is more authentic and unique to herself.
