How does Gwalchmai gain King Arthur's admiration in the novel, Hawk of May?

When Gwalchmai tries to impress the king whom he idolizes with his skill in battle he fails, for he still does not understand the true meaning of heroism. It is only when the battle-weary young man takes time out to console a dying man that he achieves the heroism Arthur most admires.
