The value of hard work is a recurring idea the book. Everyone who came to Hawaii came from someplace else and basically started over, from the time of the group from Bora Bora on. All of the successful characters were hard workers. They all had to work for what they wanted. The original missionaries came with no pay and no money and they lived off of donations from America. The benefits of their hard work were not measured in terms of money, but in terms of the changes they brought about in the population.
