Harriet Tubman: Conductor on the Underground Railroad

Old Rit taught Harriet the words of that song that the salves were forbidden to sing because of Denmark Vesey. Why was the song sung so quiet that it is “Almost whispered” in paragraph 14? Would the slaves get in trouble for singing?

We're slaves not allowed to sing religious songs?

Slaves were forbidden to sing the song because of its connection to Denmark Vesey and rebellion. Slaves might be severely punished (physically) if they were heard singing the song of Moses.
