The novel is divided into three parts. Each part contains eight or nine untitled chapters. Part I takes place in 1959. Part II takes place in 1961, and Part III is set in 1964. These structural divides are immediately inspired by Carney's character and circumstances. In Part I, Carney is desperately trying to convince himself that "you didn't have to live the way you'd been taught to live. You came from one place but more important was where you decided to go" (10).
