Writing conventions are a recurring idea. The experimentation in "Happy Endings" makes it a work of postmodern fiction. Atwood's text is self-referential as she explicitly refers to events that have happened earlier on, as well as the mechanics and elements of writing. The latter emerges as one of the story's major themes. Both directly and indirectly, Atwood addresses the whole notion of how an author develops a story.
