How are Hans and Gretel's lives different from their classmates in the novel, Hans Brinker; or, The Silver Skates?

Hans and Gretel attend the same school as middle-class children, but they do not lead easy lives. Throughout the story, many of their classmates refer to them as "rag pickers" or "peasants."
