In Chapter 10, we learn a lot about Raleigh's childhood, and how it shaped his life. The purpose of this chapter is to provide backstory and bring the character of Flonnie Roberts into sharp detail. Roberts is Jubal's mother, and she remembers the days of legal racial segregation. Her character foreshadows the character of Jubal, who will not be introduced for some time but keeps a detached and haughty attitude once he shows up in the story, much as Flonnie but without the good intentions of keeping a small boy, Raleigh, from becoming spoiled like all the other Hayes children.
