Hamlet

Why does Act Two opening with Polonius and Reynaldo tell us about Polonius's character and what theme or motif does it introduce in the play?

The discussion between Polonius and Reynaldo indicate that Polonius is highly ambitious and is likely to do some pretty underhanded things to get where he wants to go. He is using his daughter's betrothal to Hamlet, to be sure, as well as his connections at court to bargain himself into a nice situation at court. The theme that is introduced, here, is that of family and how dysfunctional most of them are in this play.
