Why isn't Henry allowed to play with the other children in the neighborhood in the novel, Ham on Rye?

Henry is forbidden to interact with other children in the neighborhood because his parents feel that the other children are poor and beneath him. Ironically, Henry's family barely struggle through the Depression themselves.
