Why does Avery's father worry about him so much in the novel, Half of Paradise?

Avery Broussard is a restless young man battling to control his alcohol consmption. His father Rafael worries about him, firstly since the boy was raised without a mother secondly is the only remaining child in the family, making extra efforts to keep Avery on the straight and narrow.
