In patrick obrian's 3rd book, hms surprise,why does the surprise sail to India via brazil instead of proceeding south around Africa?

In O'brian's third book, HMS Surprise, the ship stops in Brazil instead of proceeding south around the horn of Africa because they needed to stop for fresh food and supplies. The crew had become sick with scruvy. They also picked up a sloth while there.
